Indian university
list is large and is growing. There are basically three types
of universities in India, one run by the state which may have
central universities and state government owned universities;
the second category are "deemed to be" universities
which are essentially privately funded but are approved by
the University Grants Commission (UGC) the government regulator
for universities as stand alone institution without any powers
for granting affiliation. The third category are the private
universities which are empowered by a separate act of the
state legislature passed at different state governments. This
category is also not permitted any affiliation of colleges.
The current list of states which approve private universities
under a separate empowering legislation follows.
